We provide free education for over 740 students aged between 5-18 years who attend from Bursalah and surrounding area. We have been supporting this project since 1999. The school is based in Bursalah, very close to the border between Ethiopia and Somalia in Puntland State , Somalia . These children include orphans, street children and children from poor nomadic families.
Read Horn of Africa also built and now runs a boarding school, which started with 72 students but now accommodates for 243 students in Bursalah.
We have completed the drilling of a second borehole in the area which now provides clean water for the school, local community and the nomads.
Since 2007 we have been very busy building a new secondary school in the same village to enable students to continue their education to secondary school level. We have completed the construction of this school and all that remians now is for the building to be refurbished and readied for classes to start. Students for the secondary school are currently taking their classes during the evening in the nearby primary/intermediate school (Burar project).
Other campaigns raised money for consist of:
• drought relief
• community development initiatives
• community health facilities
• support for ill children
• provision of sports facilities for children
Our plans for the future include building a technician college as well as a univeristy to enable school leavers to continue their education and/or gain work related skills. In addition, we aim to build a hospital within the city of Bursalah as sick children and other patients of this city presently have to travel over 2 hours to reach the nearest health in Galkaio, Puntland state.
The children we support are affected by poverty and sufferings caused by many years of conflict and natural disasters in the Horn of Africa region.
